NSF 2010 Ranking: 117th (total R&D expenditures in life sciences) =$61,828,000 [1]
NIH 2011 Funding: (Direct plus indirect costs but excluding R & D contracts and ARRA awards) = $13,965,456 [2]
UC Riverside recently received $15 million in the FY 2013-14 California budget to establish a new medical school. [3]
The Department of Defense announced that it would fund a five-year $7.5 million sleep and memory study by researchers at UC Riverside, UC San Diego, the University of Arizona, and Harvard Medical School. It’s one of the largest such studies ever conducted. [4]
On March 30, 2011, the USDA awarded UC Riverside a $9 million, five-year grant to study blight diseases in potatoes and tomatoes. $4.3 million was budgeted to UCR exclusively; the balance of the $9 million will fund a national research consortium led by UCR plant pathologist Howard Judelson and UCR bioinformatics professor Thomas Girke. [5]
UC Riverside's received a $2.8 million grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine to provide the stem cell research center with three years' worth of operating expenses. [6]
UC Riverside opened the 58,000 sf research building for its future medical school on March 18, 2011. Students to be enrolled fall of 2012. [7]
UC Riverside’s Institute for Integrative Genome Biology capitalized on the genomics revolution, which has great potential for applications to improve human health, agricultural sustainability, and the environment.
The UC Riverside Division of Biomedical Sciences works closely with the University’s Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering to focus on carbon, silicon and biology nano-research.
