The largest medical center in the world, Texas Medical Center (TMC), is an internationally recognized community of 49 government and nonprofit institutions dedicated to healing, education and groundbreaking research. Institution members conduct more than $1 billion in research. [1]

NSF 2010 Ranking:
MD Anderson: 16th (total R&D expenditures in life sciences)= $531,040,000
Baylor: 22nd (total R&D expenditures in life sciences)= $447,874,000
UT Health Science Center: 49th (total R&D expenditures in life sciences)= $240,772,000 [2]

In 2011, the NIH awarded the following to institutions at the Texas Medical Center:

NIH 2011 Ranking for Baylor College of Medicine: 22nd (Direct plus indirect costs but excluding R & D contracts and ARRA awards) = $207,607,688

NIH 2011 Ranking for University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center: 40th (Direct plus indirect costs but excluding R & D contracts and ARRA awards) = $152,299,097

NIH 2011 Ranking for University of Texas Health Science Center Houston: 76th (Direct plus indirect costs but excluding R & D contracts and ARRA awards) = $72,894,262

NIH 2011 Funding for Texas A&M University Health Science Center: 76th (Direct plus indirect costs but excluding R & D contracts and ARRA awards) = $15,625,021 [3]

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) awarded The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center a five-year grant of $52.7 million to support 19 specific research programs and 24 shared-resource services and technologies used by M. D. Anderson researchers. [4]

Texas Children's Hospital and University of Houston received over $17 million for research. [5]

Neurological research at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) and Texas Children's Hospital is getting a big boost in the form of a $14.85 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to complete two floors of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute (NRI) at Texas Children"s Hospital. [6]

Baylor professors received a $1.46 million NIH grant for cancer research to study new compounds that could fight cancerous tumors. [7]

Texas Medical Center institutions include 13 renowned hospitals and two specialty institutions, two medical schools, four nursing schools, and schools of dentistry, public health, pharmacy, and virtually all health-related careers. [8]

More than 20,000 M.D.s, Ph.D.s and other doctorates practice medicine and conduct research at Texas Medical Center. Texas Medical Center employs over 93,000 staff. [9]

TMC is home to more than a dozen degree and diploma granting educational and research institutions, including Baylor College of Medicine, Rice University, Texas Southern University College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Prairie View A&M University College of Nursing, and Texas A&M Health Science Center Institute of Biosciences and Technology. [10]

The Dental Branch is building a new 300,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art dental school at the University of Texas Research Park on the south campus of the Texas Medical Center. [11]

In 2012 Texas A&M received $16.8 million in research funding from the National Institutes of Health.
