Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. (BCI) is a full-service marketing and event planning company that specializes in on-campus life science research tradeshows nationwide. Founded in 1992 by scientists, we are the oldest, most experienced, highly recognized, and professional bioresearch equipment and service tradeshow producer in the United States. Researchers know us, purchasing agents trust us, and vendors like the way we help them showcase their products.

BCI was launched 28 years ago in San Diego by research scientist and businesswoman Yolanda Nieuwkerk. Newly-relocated from Boston, where she had worked with Millipore Corporation as an industrial research scientist, Yolanda was eager to start her own business in Southern California’s hot biotechnology climate. Recognizing the need for a central newsletter of scientific events taking place across the campus of UCSD, other La Jolla research institutes, and the booming local biotech industry, the first San Diego Biotechnology Calendar announcing seminars, lectures, brown bag lunches, and other life science community activities was published and distributed by hand in September of 1992. It was an immediate success with academic researchers throughout the San Diego area, as well as suppliers looking to be represented through advertising sponsorship to the 5000 researchers who received the San Diego Biotechnology Calendar in their mailboxes every month.

The first vendor show, the inaugural San Diego Biotechnology Vendor Showcase™ (BVS),was produced by Yolanda Lerner and a small part-time staff in February 1994 as an experimental extension of the San Diego Biotechnology Calendar (Why not bring researchers and vendors together in person on campus?). Now a family affair organized and carried out with a baby son in tow, the first Biotechnology Vendor Showcase event was resoundingly popular with 500 attendees and 50 exhibitors.
In 1995 the company expanded its business yet again, to include the first UCLA and UCSF BVS events. Similarly well-received by researchers preferring to meet vendors in a structured event space rather than at their lab door, and by exhibitors welcoming the extensive pre-event marketing and steady stream of pre-qualified attendees at their table, UCLA and UCSF are still home to BVS expos twice annually. In 1996 the business relocated to Grass Valley, in Northern California.

Biotechnology Calendar, Inc. has continued to add shows every year since then, initially offering the BioResearch Product Faire™ (BRPF) event format as a smaller version of the Biotechnology Vendor Showcase™, though many of these BRPF shows are now almost as large as their BVS cousins. The BRPF Front Line event expanded further into developing research markets by offering a streamlined version of the larger shows. That model too has proven a hit with both researchers and vendors.
