NSF 2010 Ranking: 10th (total R&D expenditures in life sciences) =$625,867,000 [1]

NIH 2011 Ranking: 8th (Direct plus indirect costs but excluding R & D contracts and ARRA awards) = $371,213,244 [2]

Washington University received $50 million in funding in order to speed up medical research from discovery to actual application. [3]

The University of Washington received a $20 million gift to establish the Taylor Family Institute for Innovative Psychiatric Research, which will advance the science underlying the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric illnesses. [4]

Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis was awarded $14.3 million in 2010 from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to expand its the genomics data center. [5]

$5.2 million has been awarded by NIH to Washington University St. Louis for microbiome studies relating to the oral cavity and esophagus. [6]

Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis received a five year $3.8 million grant towards a data collection center for researchers working on projects relating to the brain and central nervous system. [7]

Washington University received $6.2 million to apply to innovative biotech research in the fields of genetics and neural circuits. [8]

Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine is an international leader in cancer treatment, research, prevention, education and community outreach. [9]

Washington University received $2 million from "Pedal the Cause" towards cancer research. [10]

The University of Washington received $2 million for unique approaches to treating cancer, including new methods of fighting infection and possibly tumors, and for identifying compounds that don’t harm normal tissues but make malignant tumors more vulnerable to radiation and chemotherapy treatments. [11]

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded Washington University St. Louis $1.1 million for the study of B-Cell induction in pediatric lung transplants.  [12]

Washington University St. Louis researchers were awarded $2.25 million to study the biomechanics of the brain.  [13]

A Washington University Saint Louis project funded initially at $100,000 and eligible for an additional $1million if extended, has successfully killed HIV virus with bee venom-laden nanoparticles. [14]

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Washington University Saint Louis approximately $1.2 million to study the Abeta peptide's role in the onset of Alzheimer's. [15]
