NSF 2010 Ranking: 8th (total R&D expenditures in life sciences) =$657,557,000 [1]

NIH 2011 Ranking: 10th (Direct plus indirect costs but excluding R & D contracts and ARRA awards) = $356,782,261 [2]

For the 2012 Fiscal Year, the campus received $1.011 billion in sponsored funds. [3]

UCLA, which is home to 290 medical research centers, received one billion dollars in funding towards research projects each year for the past three years. [4]

New Terasaki Life Science Building opened in 2010 with more than 33 labs. The new facility also houses UCLA's Broad Stem Cell Research Center (BSCRC), which has received $138.8 million to date (March 2011) from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) and over $20 million from the Broad Foundation. [5]

UCLA is set to begin the construction of a medical education building. The new $120 million, six-level, 110,000 square foot Teaching and Learning Center for Health Sciences is a major expansion for the David Geffen School of Medicine. [6]

A major addition to the Jules Stein Eye Institute’s surgical and research facility is planned by UCLA, the facility will cost $115.6 million and will provide a platform for research as well as a patient care facility. [7]

UCLA recently received $35 million in new fund to create the new multidisciplinary research Center for Function Accelerated nanoMaterial Engineering (FAME) at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. The center aims to revolutionize semiconductor technologies by developing new nanoscale materials and structures that take advantage of properties unavailable at larger scales. [8]

The California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA and 12 collaborating institutions have been awarded $24 million from the federal Environmental Protection Agency and the National Science Foundation to establish the University of California Center for Environmental Implications of Nanotechnology to design safe and environmentally benign nanomaterials.

UCLA is 9th in the US for NIH stem cell research funding FY 2010 & 2011 (as of 4/15/2011) at almost $19 million.

UCLA Researchers recently received a $10 million autism research grant. The UCLA project will focus on identifying genetic variants linked to autism spectrum disorders, with a special focus on African American families with autistic children. [9]

UCLA was recently awarded (April 2013) a $9 million contract by the National Institute of Mental Health for an ambitious effort to rapidly study promising new drugs that may help restore normal development and brain function in children with autism spectrum disorders. [10]

UCLA researchers and their partners across Los Angeles County have been awarded an $11 million federal grant to fund research on stroke prevention in disadvantaged communities. [11]

The UCLA School of Dentistry has been awarded funding of more than $11 million from the Los Angeles–based child advocacy and grant-making organization First 5 LA to expand access to dental care in Los Angeles. [12]

UCLA’s Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science received $6 million from the National Institute of Standards and Technology for the construction of the Western Institute of Nanotechnology on Green Engineering and Metrology. [13]

UCLA recently received a landmark gift of $5 million to the UCLA School of Dentistry to establish the UCLA Mick and Mary Dragoo Periodontal and Implant Clinical Research and Patient Care Center. [14]

A team of UCLA scientists was recently awarded a prestigious $1 million grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation for research aimed at reshaping and improving how images and large data sets are collected and analyzed in science, engineering, medicine and other fields. [15]

UCLA recently launched the new Children's Discovery and Innovation Institute. By bringing together pediatric physician–scientists and faculty experts from a variety of fields across the UCLA campus, the new institute will drive multidisciplinary research collaborations focused on children's health and disease and will help speed the translation of groundbreaking pediatric research findings into clinical practice.
